Founded forty years ago by Father Bruno Hussar, the Wahat al-Salam - Neve Shalom grew from a collection of tents and caravans to a vibrant community of 70 families, half Palestinian and half Jewish, all with Israeli citizenship. Most adults work outside of the community, and all children attend the binational school. The village is governed by democratically-elected committees that advance the collective goals of equality, democracy, and education for peace.
As the community grew, institutions were established to meet members' needs and advance the peace project. When children were born, members of the community founded the first binational school in the country. In order to train the next generation of peacemakers, Wahat al-Salam - Neve Shalom created the School for Peace. Religious, community, and spiritual aspirations were channeled into the Spiritual Center.
